WIPO Intergovernmental Committee (IGC) on IP and Genetic Resources, traditional knowledge and Folklore

Patricia Adjei will discuss the history and overview of the IGC, the WIPO GRATK Treaty and the focus of the next IGC in September.


The focus of the IGC is now to finalise the draft instruments on the protection of Traditional knowledge and Traditional cultural expressions after a successful outcome in May 2024 with the finalisation of the WIPO Treaty on Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional knowledge. The Australian Government and Australian Indigenous representatives played a vital role in the Diplomatic Conference of this inaugural WIPO Treaty that is the first IP law Treaty to support Indigenous rights.

Patricia Adjei

Patricia Adjei is a Wuthathi, Mabuiag Islander, and Ghanaian lawyer dedicated to protecting Indigenous cultural rights. With a background in law and policy, she leads legislative work in Australia and has published on Indigenous intellectual property. A former Churchill Fellow, she brings expertise from roles at Creative Australia, Arts Law, the Copyright Agency and WIPO.
